The Philips Sonicare HX5610/30 is the latest model revision in the essence 5600 range of electric toothbrushes. This range aims to deliver all the benefits of a sonic toothbrush at an affordable price point. As a result it’s a no-frills package, but still provides the great cleaning performance of it’s pricier counterparts.
The Philips Sonicare HX5610/30 Essence 5600 is the base Sonicare toothbrush and therefore the cheapest. Whilst it doesn’t have some of the fancier functions found in models higher up the range, all the important bits are left intact. So if you want a sonic toothbrush that just gets the job done without paying for all the extra bells and whistles, this may well be the one for you.
The key feature of a Sonicare toothbrush is of course the sonic technology. Unlike standard electric toothbrushes which have an oscillating head, a Sonicare such as the HX5610/30 vibrates extremely quickly which, along with the mechanical action of scrubbing your teeth with the bristles, disrupts plaque in harder to reach areas. This results in twice the amount of plaque being removed in comparison to a manual toothbrush.
At first it does feel a bit odd using because although it does a great job, the action is quite gentle and you have to resist the urge to brush as you would with a regular toothbrush. You’ll soon get used to it however, and you’ll quickly see and feel the results.
The HX5610/30 Essence 5600 has a very straightforward design and whilst it’s a little chunkier than the higher models it’s still very comfortable to use with a nice soft grip handle. The included toothbrush head has an angled neck to help you reach the tighter spots.
If you haven’t used a sonic toothbrush before the HX5610/30 Essence 5600 has an ‘easy-start’ feature, which basically starts cleaning your teeth more gently than usual to help you and your gums get used to the new experience. It also has a built in two minute timer to help you brush adequately for the correct amount of time.
In the box you get the main unit, one brush head, the charging base and a carry bag – everything you need to get started. The carry bag isn’t the greatest quality and seems a bit of a pointless addition. I think most people looking at a budget model would rather it wasn’t included to reduce the price even further.
You should also note that whilst this model is cheaper to buy than others in the range, replacement brush heads cost about the same as those of the higher models. They should be replaced every three months, so in the long term this is where the real costs lie, although to be fair to the HX5610/30 this is true of every electric toothbrush.
Ultimately the Sonicare HX5610/30 Essence 5600 is a great choice which is perfect if you just want to enjoy the benefits of a sonic toothbrush at the lowest price possible. Whilst it’s missing the extra features of more expensive models, it still performs where it counts – in reducing plaque and helping you obtain a high standard of oral hygiene.
